First developed in 1800, batteries still play an important part in our digital world. Recently, batteries occupy an increasingly crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of our transportation and electrical grid sectors. Yet, the limitations of battery technology remain a barrier to the market acceptance of electrified transportation and renewable energy. In conjunction with the Japan Society of Northern California, this program will explore recent trends in the North American, Japanese and Chinese markets in battery technology,
related business models and regulations for these two very important clean tech applications.
James has worked as an entrepreneur and/or startup executive in Silicon Valley since 1995. Currently, he is working with the Beijing Globe Super Power New Energy Technology Development Corp., a company that has developed a monomer Li-on battery in China. He has been dedicated to the clean energy industry for over 15 years. He holds a MBA in Project Management and has worked for Xpeed, NanoStellar, NanoExa, and others in Silicon Valley. James, has over 30 years of experience in bridging business between US companies and Greater China, Japan, Korea and other Asia Pacific Countries in the areas of OEM manufacturing, outsourcing, materials supply, E-commerce, telecommunication, energy and technology commercialization.
Luisa assists clients with regulatory counseling and policy development with a particular focus on public utility and transportation regulation. Her practice includes representing local governments, utilities, lenders, and developers before California state agencies and advising clients regarding development and acquisition of renewable energy projects. She also counsels transportation companies regarding existing and emerging regulations, regulatory filings, and operative permits, including those related to Transportation Network Companies (i.e., on-demand transportation services) and autonomous vehicles. Before joining Procopio, she served as legal counsel for the CPUC and worked at an international law firm. Luisa is licensed to practice in both the US and her native Colombia. She earned a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law, an M.B.A. from the University of San Francisco Masagung Graduate School of Management, and a law degree and certificates of specialization in Administrative and Environmental Law from the University Externado of Colombia
Michael Kanellos is a technology analyst at OSIsoft, a leader in the industrial internet of things. He has worked as a reporter, analyst and marketing exec in Silicon Valley for over 20 years covering energy, semiconductors and startups. His work has appeared in the New York Times, CNET, Forbes, Newsweek, Newsday, the Chicago Tribune and National Geographic, among other outlets. A graduate of Cornell University and the University of California, he has worked as an attorney, a travel writer and a busboy in a pancake house.
Jin Noh is the Policy Manager for the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA) – an industry trade association of over 70 member-companies representing all types and scales of technologies and projects in the energy storage ecosystem. He manages regulatory affairs and policy on behalf of CESA at the CPUC, CAISO, and CEC, covering a range of issues affecting the energy storage market, including grid planning, wholesale market design, interconnection, standards, and programs/tariffs.
Lucian Ion is a Partner and a consultant with Eneleap Consulting, LLC. He provides strategic business and technology leadership, advice and expertise on product and market strategy, international development and expansion to new global markets - focused on Energy Management and Storage, both stationary and vehicle/ Smart Grid /Eco-City solutions globally, in the US, Asia, and Europe, where he works with governments, regulatory bodies, utilities and commercial enterprises.
Lucian has more than twenty years of business and technology management experience in US, Canada, Europe and Asia, with eMotorWerks – an Enel company, LION Energy Partners, Siemens, Comverge, General Electric, National Semiconductor, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Abbott Laboratories.
Lucian is a recognized utilities and energy industry thought leader, and he is a frequent conference speaker and panelist on current energy topics (Storage, Electric Vehicles, Distributed Ledger technology, Machine Learning, industrial IoT, Smart Grid, Intelligent Energy Management, Microgrids, Demand Response and Energy Efficiency, Grid Automation, Energy Markets Design and Models, International Trends in Energy). Lucian holds a Computer Science degree and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Phil works in marketing communications at Intertrust Technologies, a Silicon Valley software company specializing in trusted distributed computing. He is also one pf the writers of the Shinpu (New Wind) Silicon Valley column in the Nikkei Sangyo Newspaper. Prior to Intertrust, Phil spent over 13 years as a US correspondent for Nikkei Business Publications covering the technology industry in Silicon Valley as well as in consulting and marketing positions in both the U.S. and Japan. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Phil also attended International Christian University in Tokyo.
